Benefits of Having Gardening As A Hobby

1. Gardening is an incredible activity to do with kids:  Children can learn the names of colors, fruits, and vegetables. By planting and harvesting, they will also learn to count. And, of course, knowing how to grow food is a skill that will assist them through their entire life, so when they’re not playing video games they could be gardening. 2. Gardening enables kids to spend time in nature, being up close and personal with butterflies, ladybugs, worms, ants, and spiders. It allows children to get comfortable with soil while learning that food comes from the earth and not a drive-through. 3. Gardening is a great way to teach your children, ownership, and responsibility. It’s a good idea to get them their own tools. Allow them to be in charge of their little patch of earth. It will demand their attention on watering, weeding, and harvesting. 4. Gardening also teaches children two universal truths. How to sustain themselves in their environment. and That resources...

Gaming as a hobby

It is nearly impossible to live in today’s modern age and not have some influence in your life from video games. They are in the news, they are on billboards, they influence various Hollywood movies, and they are basically all around us. Video games are made to entertain, to educate, and to now live active lifestyles, but over the course of only sixty years, the video game industry has changed drastically. New electronic breakthroughs are made every year, new games are created every six months, and online gaming changes daily. For years, it was thought to be a solely male hobby to take part in, but with the newest motion sensor technology by Nintendo with their Wii system, more and more women are becoming gamers every year. To imagine the world without video games would be completely absurd at this point in time as some games tend to now make more money than world released movies and sporting events. It is because of the popularity of video games that gaming is one of the most acc...
Fashion design is a career and hobby which many people choose simply because of their love of fashion in their own life. That is a big reason why many Fashion Designers truly love their work and spend countless hours enjoying it. Getting started is much easier than many people, and although becoming really successful is not as easy you must remember that all of today`s top designers started at the bottom at some point. It doesn`t matter if you with to pursue fashion design formally as a career or informally as a hobby, the place to start is by loving fashion, studying the trends and styles, and then eventually sketching your own ideas and creating prototypes. Your hobby of putting together outfits, patterns and designing beautiful clothes is a skill that can be refined if you read books based on fashion designing or join online design classes. If you are new to this hobby then these online classes can be of great help to you, as you will get to learn how to draw and cut patterns...

Student Council

Student Council Overview Student council  is a group of students elected by peers to participate in designated areas of school government. Any student is generally welcome to attend the council meetings. Student councils exist at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, though generally student councils are more prevalent at the high school level. Involvement at the lower levels has proven to be beneficial in that when students reach the higher grades, they have already experienced how meetings run and decisions are made. Generally, councils participate in the planning of school events such as prom and spirit rallies. They also assist administration with events for the local community such as blood drives or donation collections. They work with the district's school board, school administration, parent organizations, student body, and local community to decide on and approve projects and initiatives for the school, students, and community. Student council members br...

The Arts: Extracurricular Activities for the Creative Child

Creativity While there is a plethora of great fine art activities, I am going to lump it all into two categories: music and art. Let's first talk about the benefits that these two areas have in common. Both music and art use the creative brain. Musicians use creativity to represent thoughts or feelings. Low, somber pieces probably represent some kind of sad or disappointing moments and bubbly, bouncy pieces probably represent excitement or joy. Art is similar, but instead of audible creativity, its all visual. Bright, swift paint strokes probably represent something happy or new, while dull colors with long, smooth strokes might represent peace or a sense of calm. We don't need to limit creativity to instruments and painting though. There are loads of way artists can show their creativity. Think about beat boxers, composers, singers, photographers, potters, wood carvers, and people who sew, crochet, or knit. Creativity is a huge part of the process for all of these creators...

What Are Admissions Officers Looking For?

Admissions officers agree that when they're evaluating student activities, they care less about what the actual activity is and more about what it says about you. Specifically, they're looking for three things: passion, leadership, and impact . Passion Passion will manifest itself differently for different people, but college admissions officers usually notice it in the amount of time you've dedicated yourself to a certain activity over the years, and in how involved you've been in it. Are you just doing an activity so you have something to write on your college application, or are you doing it because you couldn’t  not  do it? This is something that matters a lot to college admissions officers who want to know that you're pursuing something because it's a  passion . Try to find activities that you really care about, and that you feel makes you a more motivated, better person . Admissions officers like it when students are passionate about a certain a...

The Do’s and Don’ts of Extracurriculars: Key Tips

Here are some tips for how you should approach extracurricular activities in high school. 1:  Do try as many activities as possible during your freshman year  of high school . Try out between 5 and 10 activities depending on how much room you have in your schedule (remember, never let your academics suffer because of too many activities!). There is a good chance that you will discover something new that you had never thought would interest you. Let this be your year of exploration! 2:  Do narrow down your extracurricular list to 3 – 5 activities you care most about  during your sophomore year. Remember the three most important things are  passion, leadership,  and  impact .   Continue to develop your interest in these activities and see if you can take on leadership roles, even if it’s just on small projects. 3:  Do focus more on leadership and impact  during your junior and senior years. If you have been a part of a club, how c...

What Is An Extracurricular Activity?

Your high school years are one of the best opportunities you will ever get to explore new activities, try different things, and see what you're passionate about. Inside the classroom and outside of it, you’ll start to get a better idea of who you are and what drives you. It may seem odd that colleges are going to be interested in how you choose to spend your free time. The reality is that, combined with your grades and test scores, extracurricular activities are one of the best ways that colleges will be able to get an idea of who you are. What Counts as an Extracurricular Activity ? First, let’s talk about  what an extracurricular activity looks like . The word “extracurricular” can be broken down into its roots for a literal explanation: “extra” means “outside” and “curricular” refers to all of the work you do in the classroom. So extracurricular activities are just   activities that you do outside of class . The Common App says that extracurricular activities “...
